5 reasons to try Ubuntu or Linux

5 reasons why you should dual boot Ubuntu

1. Linux is mainly free and open source so distro's like Ubuntu which is Debian based often developers will encourage donations before a download. So what is it price isn't stopping you so why not try Ubuntu its Debian based.

2. Speed Ubuntu is very fast and it is nothing like Windows and people often forget about Linux period but it ran faster from a USB stick rather than running from my HDD which surprised me as Ubuntu can be as minimal as you want it and it is netbook friendly. Also Linux can use different desktop environments so you can use Unity or Cinnamon. With Linux you can change every aspect of it like the vm.swappines=10 I personally recommend setting this to 10 to keep it running fast.

3. Viruses Ubuntu and any other Linux environment does not get PC viruses as Linux's permission system is very different from Windows if a program wants to write something or install something you are granted to enter you're password for the program to access things which is a piece of mind. Linux is a safe environment for public computers or computers for children as you don't have to worry about viruses as Microsoft does secure PCs however it is up to the user to install the programs that Microsoft offers.

4. Maintenance as Linux uses EXT3 or EXT2 or FAT32 for USB sticks to boot but using EXT partition by using Linux you don't have to defragment you're hard drive only if you are around 80% full which then you will see some fragmentation. No antivirus is needed only on you're Windows partition.

5. Requirements Ubuntu ran fine on a single core Intel Atom and continued to run fine and Ubuntu will run stable at 256 MHZ of RAM and will run fast just like any other PC at any higher amount. Ubuntu really does run fast it is just a matter of trying it.

This was not to be written to "bash" on Windows because Linux can't game like Windows can and gaming is still popular on Windows and IT professionals still use Windows so try it odds are you'll like it.

LTE VS HSPA+

Is "4G" really worth it and what types of "4G" have the advantages over others and explaining the different types of technologies.

Now every major Network offers 4G whether it is LTE or HSPA+ or even the old WiMax technology that networks like Sprint and Clear never really updated. So LTE stands for Long Term Evolution and HSPA+ stands for Evolved High Speed Packet Access and WiMax stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. So now we are familiar with the different types of 4G we can tell the pros and cons.

HSPA+ is mainly used in the US by T-MobileUSA and AT&T however with AT&T they use HSPA+ for devices with LTE to "back-down" on however the difference is with T-MobileUSA is AT&T has HSPA+ speeds up to 21 megabits instead of T-MobileUSA has DC-HSPA which has a downlink of a theoretical 42 megabits. With AT&T still selling some of HSPA+ devices you will want to keep this in mind not every device can get those speeds devices like the Samsung Infuse 4G can only get up to 14 megabits and those are theoretical megabits. However the HSPA+ has a very huge advantage and a very huge disadvantage with HSPA+ their isn't a huge battery drain rather with LTE having to turn on an additional radio now the disadvantage every time their is an upgrade to HSPA+ you have to upgrade you're device to get up to those speeds on HSPA+ which does get annoying but if you have a device like Hercules the T-Mobile Galaxy SII you are fine. With HSPA+ only networks if you don't have an HSPA+ signal you will back down to EDGE sadly. Ask you're carrier what is are theoretical speeds this device can achieve.

LTE which is used by every major carrier except for T-MobileUSA which has plans to deploy it by the summer of 2013 the difference with LTE and HSPA+ is that LTE works on lower frequencies like the 700MHZ band and Sprint using it on 1800MHZ band. The difference is with higher frequencies is that will have support for a higher capacity and with a lower frequency is that in areas like a basement will be more likely to hold an LTE signal. With LTE giving great speeds but it does require an additional radio for those speeds with LTE it does require CDMA networks to get redesign their voice network. With LTE devices don't have to get onto their 2G networks you can get onto EVDO if you have Verizon or Sprint or HSPA+ if you have AT&T.

How to unbrick hard bricked Galaxy S

How to unbrick a Hard bricked Samsung Galaxy S, this will only work on devices with Samsung's 1GHZ hummingbird processor. Please keep in mind that you're results may vary and if you're device isn't detected try reinserting the battery and pressing the power button. With hard bricked double check to see if it will turn on as some bricks are soft with a bad battery.
                                                  Gather Programs
1. If you are sure you're device is bricked in order to resurrect it you will need to install if you don't have it installed install a debian based Linux environment as the Windows has flaky drivers and it is never to late to try a new environment for you're PC. Now that it is installed you will want to download Java from the Ubuntu Software Center when you have it downloaded then download the Ultimate Hummingbird Resurrector from XDA developers once it is downloaded open you're home folder once there right click the .jar file and click properties then permissions and check off allow to be executable.

2. Then you will want to find the one click package for you're device wether it is the GT-i9000 or T959 or i897. Then when you find the package do the same thing for Ultimate humming bird resurrector then when you have the resurrector open it by right clicking it and running by clicking on Java while it is still clicked and run it and if you see a picture of 2 chips then press perform resurrection if not then keep trying reinsert the battery and press the power button then if not then you have a true brick and you must contact Samsung.

3.  With the firmware package open click on flash then after it flashes make sure flash bootloaders is checked then allow it to flash and then you're device should go onto a Samsung screen and continue booting.

Leave a comment or contact me on my Youtube channel TheDougTechCrew for oneclick packages for you're device.

Asus Transformer Prime

This is a follow up on the Asus Transformer Prime Tablet and the article for more information can be found in Maximum PC magazine the March 2011 issue.

This is the first tablet to have the nVidia Tegra 3 quad core processor with a 5 core to do small tasks like quick calculations or take a photo of something nice. The tablet runs Android 4.0 code named “IceCreamSandwich”. The tablet can accommodate a keyboard which has a full USB port so you can plug up a game controller and a play console like games on you're tablet. So playing games like Shogun and typing an essay afterwards couldn't be any easier. This tablet is equipped with a 10” screen with a resolution of 1280x800 and it capable of 1080p video play back. Rather than an accessory like a keyboard bringing down you're battery life this tablet has a maximum battery life 18 hours with the key board and is included with software that can not be removed however in Android 4.0 built in applications can be disabled.

This tablet is highly recommended as in this world PCs aren't dying they are just meeting their companions to help you get what needs to be done. On this tablet you can do so much like you can write that article while you are on the train going to work. You will want to be advised that with this tablet having a quad core processor it will not have support for 4G LTE but it will work with any other type of network technology such as HSPA+ but sadly the transformer does not support these such communications. The tablet will be an excellent thing to have when you are on the road but in no way is it a replacement for a PC as it is only a tablet.

Norton irritates user

This is a follow up on a small article I felt it was interesting because the popular software company Symantec sued as a scareware seller. The article can be found in Maximum PC magazine the March 2011 issue.

A man claims that Norton Utilities said made his PC full of privacy issue and continued to display them while he was using his PC. Also as a PC user I feel that Norton constantly aggravated me for multiple things how when it would constantly bug me about potential malware on my PC that didn't exist and the fact that unistalling the software completely requires me to download their own program to completely “remove” their program and before removing the program it literally want to to enter a code to verify which bugs me and makes me wonder about the numerous IT professionals having to maintenance hundereds of computers and having to enter a code for every single would become very time consuming.

The man states that Symantec uses these warnings to trick their users to purchase licences for their products. With Symantec's popular Norton AntiVirus when a trial is activated the program constantly harasses it's users to upgrade their license and if you wait you are hit with a annoyance every hour it minimizes full screen applications and makes the user want to quit using their computer completely until the program is fully unistalled which requires another Symantec program which users don't know if it putting more registry keys onto the computer.

Ram Disk

This is a tutorial on how to get super fast storage with a RAM disk image. Further details can be found in Maximum PC the March 2011 issue.

The speeds using a RAM disk image are 10 times faster than a top shelf Solid State Drive. If you are the type of person who needs temporary storage or has plenty of RAM to spare and want to try this try it. However you're speeds may vary as Ram is different from any other type of memory like if you are on DDR RAM than don't expect much but on DDR2 @ 800MHZ ram speeds were around 1000/mbs and got as high as 1700/mbs. If you are on DDR3 @ 1600MHZ you can expect speeds to be around 6500/mbs and with a RAM disk the speeds have been consistently this high sometimes the write speeds were faster than the read times.

You should try a RAM disk if you are a video editor and need temporary space for a project or even if you want to store you're temporary system files or even change where you're browser caches it's files. There are plenty of RAM disk programs but I personally recommend SoftPerfect as it allows you to create multiple images. But be advised as RAM is formatted every time you turn off you're PC whether it is hibernated or even at deep sleep and you're PC turns back on RAM will be formatted so BACK UP and don't depend on this as you're hard drive.

How to speed up you're Android Phone

ROOTING OR INSTALLING CUSTOM FIRMWARE ON YOU'RE DEVICE WILL VOID THE WARRANTY I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT YOU DO.

This is an article on How to super charge you're Android phone. The article can be found in Maximum PC magazine the March 2011 issue.

First thing first the device used in this article is was a Samsung Galaxy Skyrocket which is quite old but is certainly no slouch. This article gives a few details such as installing a custom recovery image to install Cyanogen Mod and does involve rooting which is not universal for every device on the market as not every device runs the same security features and the same version of Android.

To install a custom Rom on newer Samsung Galaxy devices requires a PC and a USB data cable as well as an Internet connection. To install a custom Rom you will need to find the correct kernel image that contains a custom recovery such as ClockworkMod recovery or any recovery based on CWM the last 2 programs you will need are Odin Or Heimall these are you're flashing programs but be advised about a few things as Odin is Windows only and Heimdall can be used on OSX, Windows, or Linux but in Windows drivers installed for Heimdall can only be used in Heimdall and for the easiest way on Flashing in Heimdall use Heimdall-Frontend as that is the GUI for Heimdall. If you are new to flashing firmware or anything always pay attention to the instructions and NEVER FLASH A BOOT LOADER as a bad bootloader flash will literally make you're device a paper weight.

So if you don't want to flash custom firmware there are still a couple of tips you can use with or without rooting your device. The first way of speeding up you're device is to manage you're tasks and avoid applications that require services to constantly stay running Android has a built in way of managing those applications as any device running 2.2 or higher applications have the right to run at start up. To get you're running tasks goto Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Running and you will see the running services on you're device you may chose which applications you don't running. However this can be a time consuming task to avoid doing this down Advance Task Killer when you have it installed go to home and add the widget and tap the widget to close running applications and voila feel a faster device with better battery life.
-->          The next way speeding up you're device is to install the V6 super charger to install it you will have to root you're device and install Busy Box. To install a script is going to be pretty tricky on a stock Rom as certain mods only work on custom Roms. To install Busy Box head over to the Play Store and install Busy Box the latest version is recommended now and allow when it request root rights then go to the Play Store and download Script Manager and locate the script and only run as root then follow the instructions and reboot to apply the changes.

MegaDetails

This is my response on the article about MegaUploads mega take down. The article can be found in Maximum Pc magazine the April 2011 issue.

What I will like to say is that when the FBI shutdown MegaUpload the website I toke it serious. Not because I felt like something has been stolen from me. But in the FBI's defence Mega Upload was charged with 5 crimes which all of them happen to be federal. The makers of MegaUpload aren't from the United States however that didn't seem to be an issue because thats when New Zealand comes into arrest the makers and throw them into jail.

For some reason lots of people agree that this seemed to be an act of greed but this does seem to deal with the SOPA/PIPA act. From what I believe S.O.P.A stands for Stop Online Piracy Act and P.I.P.A stands for Protect Internet Piracy Act.

About the entire thing all I can really can say is feeling of authority all of a sudden gives people greed and to take what is not their's. The Internet is not mine nor is it just you're s its everyone's no one gets a large chunk its all ours and taking it would be stealing.

Now however the maker of MegaUpload has thought of making plans of making another file sharing website called "Mega". But here comes the catch on Kim's bail this could violate his bail maybe even bring new charges to Kim Dotcom. However Kim says he has no plans to relaunch a similar service until everything settles down with his case. During the raid of Kim's house he was beaten by the New Zealand anti terror police. With the domain being seized it can not be sold as it was seized by the FBI.
