Ram Disk

This is a tutorial on how to get super fast storage with a RAM disk image. Further details can be found in Maximum PC the March 2011 issue.

The speeds using a RAM disk image are 10 times faster than a top shelf Solid State Drive. If you are the type of person who needs temporary storage or has plenty of RAM to spare and want to try this try it. However you're speeds may vary as Ram is different from any other type of memory like if you are on DDR RAM than don't expect much but on DDR2 @ 800MHZ ram speeds were around 1000/mbs and got as high as 1700/mbs. If you are on DDR3 @ 1600MHZ you can expect speeds to be around 6500/mbs and with a RAM disk the speeds have been consistently this high sometimes the write speeds were faster than the read times.

You should try a RAM disk if you are a video editor and need temporary space for a project or even if you want to store you're temporary system files or even change where you're browser caches it's files. There are plenty of RAM disk programs but I personally recommend SoftPerfect as it allows you to create multiple images. But be advised as RAM is formatted every time you turn off you're PC whether it is hibernated or even at deep sleep and you're PC turns back on RAM will be formatted so BACK UP and don't depend on this as you're hard drive.
